CONSTRUCTION.
Gauze. Iron 32 mesh.
31/2 ins high, tapering from 13/4 ins to 1? ins. diameter.
Chimney. 4 ins high tapering from 11/4 ins high to ? ins diameter.
The bottom of the chimney is 1 ins below the horizontal supporting gauze.
The base and frame are to the design of Dubrelle.
Lock. A spring lock, probably developed from the design of Souher, is fitted. To release it the thumb screw controlling the wick must be turned to put out the flame, when further turning will release the lock and the base of the lamp will be unscrewed.
The metal screens which conceal the flame when it is reduced for gas testing were introduced by M.M. Mallard et Le Chatelier in 1881.
HISTORICAL NOTE.
Mueseler, a Belgian, patented his lamp, which had a gauze and a chimney, in 1840. In 1864 the Belgian Government made the use of Mueseler lamps compulsory, even prescribing the dimensions of the lamps. This particular lamp is made to their specifications.
In other countries the Mueseler lamp met with a mixed reception. It has been described as a 'Clanny lamp with a chimney'. Though such a description is more or less correct it should be born in mind that experiments proved that the chimney itself was an important safeguard and could be an aid to ventilation.
The lights in early Mueseler lamps were easily extinguished if the lamps were tilted.
