THE GRAY-SUSSMAN LAMP.

CONSTRUCTION.
This battery operated hand lamp operated from a battery of the 4-volt lead-acid type.
The battery case was enamelled on the inside and tin-plated on the outside.
Lock. Lead rivet.
Standards. 4 standards, made of steel, mounted on the steel top plate of the lamp. One end of each standards was screw-threaded and the standards were secured to the top plate by means of nuts both inside and out.
Glass. Prismatic well glass housing a 4-volt bulb of 3-watt rating. The well glass also housed the platinum alloy filament for the Thornton Firedamp Detector.
NOTE.
The Catalgue of Lamps produced in 1946 contained three photographs of Professor Thornton's Firedamp Detector but no accompanying text.
These notes were prepared from Professor Thornton's paper recorded in the Transactions of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Vol. LXXXV 1932-1933 in 2005 by Alan Vickers when he completed the retyping of the text of the original catalogue, parts of which had become difficult to read.
