HISTORICAL NOTE.
Mr. Ayton produced many patterns of safety lamps, this one in 1883. The most noteworthy feature of this is the height of the air intake (only 2 ins from the top of the lamp) to facilitate gas testing near the roof.
Ayton's lamps were quite popular in the northern coalfield.

No. 49.
AYTON'S IMPROVED LAMP (No. 1.)
Presented by E.F. Ayton.
Made by Mills, Newcastle.
CONSTRUCTION.
Gauze. 28 mesh iron.
Cylindrical 61/2 ins high.
The special feature of this lamp is the air intake which passes down the four hollow standards from holes near their top, through a horizontal gauze in the bottom ring, through the main gauze to the flame.
At the middle ring is a horizontal gauze.
The air intake is thus only 2 ins. from the top of the lamp which would facilitate gas testing near the roof.
